Ronning Centre Symposium: Religious Perspectives on Civil Life, Mar 18-22
Mar 18, 2011 9:00 am
Religious Perspectives on Civil Life Symposium

In an attempt to temper the kind of religious insularity that turns its back on civil life on the one hand and the widespread secularism that thinks religion has nothing to contribute to civil life on the other hand, the Ronning Centre for the Study of Religion and Public Life, based on the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta, will be hosting a major symposium this March. The symposium will feature both local and international scholars on the theme: “Religious Perspectives on Civil Life,” and is co-sponsored by the ECMC Chair in Islamic Studies at the University of Alberta and the Istanbul Foundation for Science & Culture, and in partnership with King’s University College and St. Mary’s University College.

Ronning Centre Director David J. Goa envisions this as “first of a series” and will focus on “the capacity of religion to cultivate the faithful’s responsibility for the civil life—how does it do that? Why does it care?”

The Edmonton event will be held at the King’s University College (9125 – 50 St NW) on Friday, March 18 and Saturday, March 19 (from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day) and will focus on the neo-Calvinism of Abraham Kuyper, the Islam of Said Nursi, and modern Lutheranism. The Calgary event will be held at St. Mary’s University College (14500 Bannister Road SE) on Monday, March 21 and Tuesday, March 22 (from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day) and will focus on the Islam of Said Nursi, Roman Catholicism since the Second Vatican Council, and the Hesychastic tradition of Eastern Orthodoxy. The symposium will delve into these questions in detail by having a very specific focus for each tradition.

Each day of the event will focus on two of the themes below, to be addressed by scholars from each religious tradition:
  • How does each tradition understand the private sphere, the public sphere, and the secular?
  • What are the sources within each tradition that cultivate a life-giving stance toward the other?
  • What lessons can be drawn from a concrete and recent example within each tradition of its way of responding to the struggles found in the communities of another tradition?
  • How do spiritual disciplines central to each tradition prepare the faithful for active citizenship?

The papers presented by the scholars will be published. “The twenty-first century is going to require all of us to think much more deeply about what it means to be a human being and how we can respond to the issues of our time in a life-giving way and do so in the civil sphere” explains Ronning Centre Director David J. Goa. This symposium will be one step toward doing that.

Registration is free, but please send your name and contact information as well as which city you will attend to Rebecca Warren. More information can be found at the Ronning Centre website.

The Augustana Connection: Camrose & District Community Band in Concert
Mar 20, 2011 2:00 pm
On Sunday, March 20th, the Camrose & District Community Band, under the direction of Tom Spila, will perform a concert at the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta in Camrose. The concert, held in the Faith & Life Chapel, begins at 2:00 pm and there will be a silver collection at the door. The Band will perform a variety of selections, from standard concert band literature and marches to jazz and movie themes.

The Camrose and District Community Band was formed in 1983. It was started by a group of 26 interested local musicians, under the guidance of Tom Spila, for the purpose of providing a recreational adult band for the community. Camrose has always been an active area musically, going back to the days of the Rose City Band in the 1960's. The formation of the Camrose and District Community Band allowed former Rose City Band members, former school players and interested beginners to join in an enjoyable evening of music every week, and to acquire and improve skills many thought were long gone.

The focus of the band is educational, but the group also provides a wonderful social outlet. Members thrive musically and make new acquaintances at the same time. Membership is open to anyone over the age of 18 and in fact, has ranged from 18 to over 90 years. The business of the band is handled by an elected executive with help from various committees. The band’s repertoire consists of a wide variety of styles. Performances include local trades shows and events, public concerts and festivals. Membership has grown to over 60 and includes people from all walks of life. For many years now Augustana students with past band experience have been able to join in the band as full members while receiving university credit for their work.

The group rehearses Tuesday evenings at Camrose Composite High School and is directed by Tom Spila with assistance from Robert (Bob) Bailey, R. J. (Bob) Wilson, and Norman Skretting. The season runs from late September to early June. The band welcomes all newcomers so if you are interested, come out to the concert the afternoon of March 20th and feel free to talk to members of the band, the director, or his assistants. Feel free to call 672-1051 for further information.

Silver collection at the door. R.A.R.E.

Creating Rural Connections 2011 Conference, Apr 12-14
Apr 14, 2011 8:30 am
Mayfield Inn & Suites, Edmonton, AB

Get ready for the perfect blend of rural and post-secondary collaboration. During three exciting days of presentations, discussions and networking, top-notch speakers will share their rural projects, programs, research and lessons learned. Organized by the Alberta Rural Development Network (ARDN), the conference features three diverse keynote speakers, breakout sessions, interactive discussion, networking opportunities, and a research priorities workshop. Click here to learn more and register.

Creating Rural Connections 2011 Conference

The Creating Rural Connections 2011 conference will give delegates the opportunity to learn from and network with individuals and organizations involved in the vitality and well-being of rural communities. This must-attend conference takes place from April 12 to 14, 2011 in Edmonton at the Mayfield Inn & Suites, and features an exciting array of speakers and interactive sessions.

Co-hosted by the Alberta Rural Development Network (ARDN), Athabasca University, Grant MacEwan University, NorQuest College, NAIT and the University of Alberta, participants will include rural Albertans, representatives from community-based organizations, post-secondary researchers and faculty, and government representatives.

Delegates will hear about successful rural projects, and how partnerships between communities and post-secondary institutions have resulted in new insights and outcomes. Networking breaks will provide time to discuss rural issues, community-based projects, and explore the potential for new projects and collaboration.

A preliminary program is available online. Keynote speakers include Charlie French from the University of New Hampshire, Mike Stolte from the Centre for Innovative and Entrepreneurial Leadership, and Jeff Dixon from Queen’s University’s Monieson Centre.

The conference includes a tradeshow where organizations can showcase their services or products, and participants can learn more about assistance available for rural communities and research projects. But it won’t all be hard work. At the evening banquet and networking reception, you can enjoy good food, good company, and Jason – That Funny Magic Guy, who will entertain you with a unique mix of magic and humour.

Delegates will also have the opportunity to participate in a needs assessment workshop on the priorities and needs for rural development research in Alberta. Input and feedback gathered at this workshop will be used to guide future ARDN facilitated rural development projects.

The Creating Rural Connections 2010 conference in Lethbridge led to more than a dozen collaborations among post-secondary institutions and between post-secondary institutions and rural communities. A panel session in 2011 will highlight these and other partnerships, and tell you how those relationships were developed, the problems encountered and overcome, and the benefits of the collaboration. So be sure to reserve April 12 to 14 and register soon to take part in this year’s opportunity to connect and learn about rural development in Alberta.
